Couple at the Giant's Causeway during their Northern Ireland elopement

Ireland might be a relatively small island, but choosing where to elope in Ireland can be surprisingly difficult.

Do you want enormous Atlantic cliffs? A ruined castle overlooking the ocean? Mountains and lakes? Ancient ruins? A traditional Irish castle? Or somewhere relatively close to Dublin so your guests don’t have to spend hours traveling?

The best region of Ireland for your elopement depends on much more than which photograph catches your eye.

Quick answer: For dramatic Atlantic scenery, consider County Clare and the west coast. For mountains, lakes and classic Irish landscapes, Kerry is difficult to beat. Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast is ideal for couples who want castles and rugged coastline together, while Donegal offers incredible scenery and a more remote feel. Wicklow and Ireland’s east are particularly convenient if staying closer to Dublin matters. And if you want castles, country houses and intimate venues rather than an adventurous outdoor ceremony, there are excellent options throughout the country.

Having helped couples plan more than 1,500 elopements, intimate weddings and vow renewals throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland since 2014, we’ve learned that there is no single “best” part of Ireland to get married.

There is, however, usually a region that makes the most sense for your wedding.

This guide compares some of the best regions of Ireland for an elopement and explains what each one does particularly well.

1. County Clare and Ireland’s west coast

Best for: dramatic cliffs, Atlantic scenery and the Ireland many overseas couples picture before they arrive.

For couples traveling from the United States or Canada and dreaming of an unmistakably Irish landscape, the west coast is often where the search begins.

County Clare is home to the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most recognizable natural landmarks.

But planning a cliff elopement involves more than simply choosing the famous viewpoint.

Privacy, wind, rain, accessibility, guest numbers and an alternative ceremony location all matter.

Our Cliffs of Moher elopements take place at Hags Head, where couples have private drive-up access close to the ceremony area rather than having to walk from the main visitor center.

An indoor weather backup is also included with our Cliffs of Moher packages.

That can be particularly important when guests are traveling thousands of miles to attend.

The wider west of Ireland also gives couples access to beautiful countryside, the Burren, beaches, historic ruins and traditional Irish towns and villages.

Choose Clare and the west if…

You want the big Atlantic landscape to be one of the defining parts of your wedding.

It works especially well for couples who love dramatic photography and don’t mind embracing Ireland’s famously changeable weather.

2. Kerry and Ireland’s southwest

Best for: mountains, lakes, castles, green landscapes and couples who want lots of scenery in one region.

Kerry offers a very different version of Ireland.

Instead of concentrating primarily on enormous sea cliffs, you can combine mountains, lakes, forests, historic buildings and Atlantic coastline.

Killarney National Park is one of the best-known options, particularly for couples who imagine their Ireland wedding surrounded by mountains and lakes.

The wider Kerry landscape also makes it possible to turn the wedding into an adventure rather than limiting everything to one ceremony location.

For a couple-only elopement, that could mean photographs in several landscapes during the same day.

For a small destination wedding with family and friends, Kerry also offers plenty of hotels and venues that allow the celebration to continue after the ceremony.

Choose Kerry if…

You want variety.

It’s particularly suited to couples who can’t decide between mountains, lakes, castles and wild Irish scenery because you can experience several of them during the same trip.

3. Northern Ireland and the Causeway Coast

Best for: dramatic castle ruins, rugged coastline and an unforgettable wedding-day photography adventure.

Northern Ireland deserves to be considered separately because the landscape — and the legal marriage process — are different from the Republic of Ireland.

For scenery, the Causeway Coast is exceptional.

One of its standout wedding locations is Dunluce Castle, a medieval castle ruin perched above the Atlantic.

For couples coming from North America, it delivers two things they often imagine when thinking about Ireland:

an ancient castle and a spectacular coastline.

Another advantage of this region is the number of very different photography locations within reach.

Depending on your plans, a wedding day can combine Dunluce with beaches, cliffs, castle ruins and other locations along the Causeway Coast without trying to cover opposite sides of Ireland.

For adventurous couples, locations such as Kinbane Castle offer an even wilder and more remote experience.

Choose the Causeway Coast if…

You can’t decide between an Irish castle elopement and a coastal elopement.

Here, you don’t necessarily have to.

It’s also one of our favorite regions for couples who want their wedding photographs to feel like an adventure through Ireland rather than a traditional wedding photo session.

4. Donegal and Ireland’s northwest

Best for: adventure, wilderness, mountains, remote coastline and couples who want to get away from Ireland’s busiest visitor locations.

Donegal feels different again.

It’s wild, spacious and exceptionally beautiful.

Couples can find mountains, beaches, sea cliffs, isolated churches, historic ruins and vast stretches of Atlantic coastline.

Slieve League offers extraordinary cliff scenery, while locations such as Dunlewey Church place you among mountains rather than beside Ireland’s better-known visitor attractions.

Donegal can be especially appealing to couples who started their search looking at the Cliffs of Moher but eventually realized that what they really wanted was wild Irish scenery and a sense of adventure, rather than one particular landmark.

There is a tradeoff.

The remoteness that makes Donegal special also means travel needs to be considered carefully, particularly when bringing older relatives, young children or a larger group of guests.

Choose Donegal if…

You want somewhere that feels wild, adventurous and less obvious.

For a couple-only elopement where the landscape and photography experience are major priorities, Donegal can be incredible.

5. Wicklow and Ireland’s east

Best for: couples who want beautiful Irish scenery without traveling too far from Dublin.

Not every couple wants to land in Dublin and immediately drive across the country.

That’s where Ireland’s east becomes particularly interesting.

County Wicklow combines mountains, valleys, woodland, historic locations and country estates while remaining much more convenient for couples spending part of their trip in Dublin.

This can make the region particularly practical for a destination wedding where guests are arriving separately from the United States, Canada or elsewhere.

It can also work well when your Ireland wedding is only one part of a shorter vacation and you don’t want to spend large portions of the trip traveling between regions.

The atmosphere is different from Clare or Donegal.

You aren’t choosing Wicklow for huge Atlantic cliffs.

You’re choosing it for green landscapes, mountains, woodland, history and convenience.

Choose Wicklow and the east if…

You want beautiful Irish scenery but easy access from Dublin matters.

It’s particularly worth considering for couples bringing guests or combining their wedding with several days in Dublin.

6. Ireland’s Midlands

Best for: castles, historic estates, countryside and intimate weddings with guests.

The middle of Ireland sometimes gets overlooked when couples begin researching an Ireland elopement.

That’s understandable.

International visitors often start with the coastline because those are the photographs they’ve seen most often.

But if your dream isn’t actually to stand on a windy cliff, the Midlands can make much more sense.

This part of Ireland offers historic castles, country estates, ancient sites and peaceful rural scenery.

It can be particularly good for an intimate castle wedding, where you want the ceremony, dinner and perhaps accommodation relatively close together.

That creates a very different wedding day from an adventurous couple-only elopement.

Instead of moving between several outdoor locations, you can spend more time celebrating with the people you’ve brought to Ireland.

Choose the Midlands if…

Your priority is an Irish castle experience, history and time with your guests, rather than dramatic coastal scenery.

7. Southeast Ireland

Best for: intimate castles, historic properties, countryside and couples who want to explore beyond Ireland’s most famous elopement locations.

Ireland’s southeast — including areas such as Waterford, Wexford and the surrounding counties — offers another alternative to the heavily photographed west coast.

This region can work particularly well for small weddings where accommodation, dinner and guest comfort are just as important as the ceremony backdrop.

Historic properties and castle settings can give couples the distinctly Irish experience they want without designing the entire day around a remote outdoor location.

For couples traveling with parents, grandparents or children, that practicality can become much more important than it initially seems.

And because many international couples immediately concentrate on Clare, Kerry or Dublin, looking elsewhere can introduce you to locations you might never have discovered during your initial research.

Choose the southeast if…

You want historic Ireland, beautiful countryside and an intimate celebration with guests rather than a purely adventure-focused elopement.

Which part of Ireland has the best scenery for an elopement?

That depends on what you mean by “best.”

For huge Atlantic cliffs, start with County Clare.

For mountains and lakes, look at Kerry.

For castles beside dramatic coastline, consider Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast.

For wild and remote landscapes, Donegal is difficult to beat.

For mountains and countryside relatively close to Dublin, explore Wicklow.

And if your idea of beautiful Ireland involves castles, ancient ruins and historic estates, don’t assume you need to be on the coast at all.

What is the best region of Ireland for a small destination wedding with guests?

When guests are involved, we recommend looking beyond scenery.

Consider:

  • How far everyone will need to travel after arriving in Ireland
  • Whether older or less-mobile guests can comfortably reach the ceremony
  • Nearby accommodation
  • Where everyone will eat afterward
  • Transportation
  • An indoor option if the weather changes
  • Whether you actually want to spend several hours of your wedding day driving between locations

A remote cliff or castle ruin might be perfect for two adventurous people and completely wrong for a wedding with 25 guests.

For small destination weddings, a castle, country house or location with accommodation and dinner nearby can often make the day much easier.

Which region is best if we’re flying into Dublin?

If minimizing travel is important, look first at Dublin, Wicklow and Ireland’s east.

But don’t automatically rule out other regions.

Many of our international couples turn their wedding into part of a longer Ireland trip, spending time in Dublin before traveling to Clare, Kerry, Donegal or Northern Ireland.

The important thing is not trying to fit too much into the wedding day itself.

Ireland looks small on a map, but driving between regions takes time.

Which part of Ireland is best for a couple-only elopement?

A couple-only wedding gives you considerably more freedom.

Without needing to move a group of guests, locations such as Donegal, Kerry, the Burren, the Causeway Coast and other remote parts of Ireland become much easier to consider.

Our Lite elopement packages were created specifically for couples looking for a simpler couple-only experience and include locations around Ireland.

Is Northern Ireland different for getting legally married?

Yes.

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have different marriage authorities, procedures and notice requirements.

That doesn’t mean either needs to be complicated, but international couples should understand which legal process applies before choosing their ceremony location.

This is particularly important if you’re comparing somewhere such as the Cliffs of Moher in the Republic of Ireland with Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland.

Our Ireland-based planning team can connect couples with the appropriate local marriage authority and guide them toward the correct process for their chosen location.

Should we choose the region or the wedding location first?

Usually, start with the experience you want, rather than the county.

Ask yourselves:

  • Do we want cliffs, castles, mountains, ruins or countryside?
  • Will it be just the two of us or are we bringing guests?
  • How important is privacy?
  • Are any guests elderly or less mobile?
  • Do we want a legal ceremony?
  • How much traveling are we comfortable doing?
  • Do we need accommodation and dinner close to the ceremony?
  • How important is an indoor weather backup?

Once you answer those questions, the right part of Ireland often becomes much easier to identify.

So, what is the best region of Ireland for an elopement?

There isn’t one region we’d recommend to every couple.

Choose Clare for iconic Atlantic cliffs.

Choose Kerry for mountains, lakes and variety.

Choose the Causeway Coast for castles and dramatic coastline.

Choose Donegal for wild scenery and adventure.

Choose Wicklow and the east for beautiful landscapes with easier access from Dublin.

Choose the Midlands or southeast if castles, historic properties and celebrating with guests matter more than standing on a remote cliff.

The most important thing is to choose a region that works for the wedding you’re actually planning — not simply the location that appears most often on Instagram.
